Meta’s Muse AI assistant tops 3.4 million downloads and the US App Store in under three weeks
Muse, Meta’s personal AI agent app launched September 8, has passed 3.4 million downloads and held the top spot on the US App Store since September 18.

Muse, Meta’s personal AI agent app, has passed 3.4 million downloads since its September 8, 2026 launch, according to Sensor Tower estimates cited by TechCrunch on September 25, 2026. It’s currently available only in the US and Canada.
The facts
-
Rankings: Muse reached No. 1 on the US App Store on September 18, 2026, and has held it since. It topped Google Play on September 19, 2026.
-
Growth: Sensor Tower says downloads grew 55% day over day on average in the first two weeks (September 8–17, 2026). ChatGPT averaged 24% in its first 10 days.
-
Estimates vary: Apptopia puts total downloads at 4.3 million and Appfigures at about 2.3 million.
-
Promotion: Meta is running heavy house ads for Muse across Facebook and Instagram and buying ads on Reddit, TikTok and YouTube. Still, Sensor Tower says ads accounted for only 6% of its impressions through September 19, 2026.
-
New features: announced at Meta Connect: video chat with the Muse avatar, computer use on the Mac, a dedicated email address, more connectors, and smart-glasses integration.
-
Milestone (October 1 update): per Sensor Tower, Muse passed 5 million US downloads on September 30, about 22 days after launch — ChatGPT took 56 days, Grok 103, Claude 492; it held the No.1 spot on the US App Store free chart for 12 straight days through September 30; only 23 US apps have ever crossed 5M in 22 days (about 85% are games); Meta ramped ads from September 16, taking up to 50% of its own ad impressions within two weeks. The Information (paywalled) reports weekly active users above 3 million.
Our take
Muse shows real mass-market demand for personal agents, and that distribution is still Big Tech’s edge: Meta can route billions of existing users straight to it.
For small teams building personal assistants or agents, head-on competition in general-purpose assistants just got harder; vertical use cases or deep integrations look more realistic. Also, The Information reported that a security researcher found a vulnerability in Muse, after which Meta strengthened its in-app safety warning. Think twice before granting it access to your email and computer.
For comparison, OpenAI’s Dots is the same-category launch to watch.
